I decided to separate a bunch of my player's limbs (it's a lot less brutal than it sounds, I promise) so I could work with animations a lot easier. The head and torso are separated and bob up and down, and that also helps me do a proper blinking animation while the player is moving.
The feet are separated so I can properly have the player walk without interrupting the other animations going on, and I think all of this ties together nicely to make the gameplay a bit more lively overall.
The arms are also animated, but separated from the torso and head. This can probably be used for smarter punching/swinging arms if I was a talented coder of sorts-- but right now I just keep this separated to keep the animations all working.
Here's a video preview so you can see everything working at once.
